Luigi Waites
Lewis "Luigi" Waites (born July 10, 1927 in Omaha ; † April 6, 2010 ibid) was an American jazz musician ( vibraphone , drums ) and music teacher .
Waites began playing drums when he was twelve; from an early age he performed in local nightclubs around his hometown. He then lived for a while in Chicago , California and toured Europe before being mostly active in the Omaha area. During his military service in the US Army, he met Elvin Jones . In 1960 Waites founded The Contemporaries . Waites, who had received no formal training himself, worked as a music teacher for the Nebraska Arts Council in schools in Nebraska ; in the 1970s he was a soloist in the National School Tours program . Waites has performed weekly at Mr. Toad’s Club since 1975, and as a soloist for the last five years of his life. He also played with Ella Fitzgerald , Dizzy Gillespie , Lionel Hampton and James Brown . From 1975 he was one of the organizers of the Omaha Summer Arts Festival . In the 2000s he worked with the pop band Shelter Belt. He released several albums under his own name, Fear Not (2001) with his formation Luigi Inc. and in 2005 Distant Relatives . A live album has so far remained unreleased.
Waites received several awards; in 1996 he was the Council's “Artist of the Year”. In 2005 he was inducted into the Omaha Black Music Hall of Fame , in 2006 honored with the Omaha Entertainment and Arts Award for his life's work ; Another award as a jazz artist followed in 2009.
As a drummer, Waites was influenced by Buddy Rich , Jo Jones , Louie Bellson and Max Roach .
