Luis Moreno (born March 19, 1981 in Panama City ) is a former Panamanian soccer player . The defender has been under contract with Tauro FC for the majority of his career . He was a national player for Panama.

Moreno caused an international stir on February 27, 2011 when he kicked an owl lying dazed on the grass during his club's game at Atlético Junior de Barranquilla at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez , which later died of the injuries suffered.

Club career

Moreno started his professional career in 2000 with the Venezuelan first division club Deportivo Italia , where he has not yet made the breakthrough. He then moved to his home country for the Panamanian club Tauro FC . During his four years there, Moreno became a regular. For the 2005 season he was signed by the Colombian second division side Envigado FC , for whom he met twice in 43 appearances.

In mid-2006, however, he moved back to his homeland for record champions Tauro FC , with whom he celebrated the Panamanian championship in 2010. In 2007 he played CD for the Colombian first division club Santa Fe . Moreno was also used there regularly, but his contract was canceled. In the same year he had a short engagement with CD Veracruz in Mexico before he returned home to Tauro.

In early 2011, Moreno moved back to Colombia on loan, where he was under contract with the first division club Deportivo Pereira during this time . After half a year he played football again for Tauro FC in his home country, where he ended his career in 2016.

National team career

Moreno has played in the Panamanian national soccer team since 2001 and took part with his team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2005 , 2007 and 2009 , where he was elected to the team of the tournament. The defender has not yet managed to score an international match. He played his last game against Paraguay in 2011 .

Killing an owl

In February 2011, Moreno caused a scandal when, during a game broadcast live on Colombian television, he kicked an owl who later died of too high a lactic acid concentration, which can result from intensive contact with people. The owl inhabited for some time the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez of Atlético Junior and was there due to their frequent presence as a kind of living mascot . During Deportivo Pereira's visit, the animal settled on the pitch and was unlucky enough to be hit by the ball. After the game was interrupted and members of the civil defense prepared to recover the dazed wild animal lying on the field, Moreno ran about ten meters towards the bird and kicked it in the direction of the outer line. Although the owl was immediately put into veterinary care, it died the day after next. The images of the kick went around the world and made Moreno ingloriously well known.

The Colombian environmental authority has initiated proceedings against Moreno for cruelty to animals . The Panamanian, who meanwhile regretted his attack, was sentenced to a fine of 10,000 euros. In addition, the player from the first division club Deportivo Pereira had to publicly apologize for the cruelty to animals and do charitable work in a zoo .

In the same year, Moreno again made a negative impression when he kicked an opponent from the Deportivo Cali club with full force in the upper body . He was immediately given the red card and banned for two games and fined $ 500 .
