Lukas Salzmann

Lukas Salzmann (* 1960 in Düsseldorf ) is a Swiss painter. In his work, Salzmann focuses on representational painting, but since 1988 has developed his own technique of overpainting photographic templates.

Life

Lukas Salzmann grew up in Valais and Zurich . After the one-year preliminary course at the Zurich School of Applied Arts , he began to turn to painting as an autodidact . In 1995 he spent six months in Paris at the Cité Internationale des Arts on a studio grant from the Canton of Zurich , and from 1998–1999 he spent a year in New York on a studio grant from the City of Zurich .

In 1988 Lukas Salzmann began with his technique of painting over photographic templates from books and magazines. In 2006, Benteli Verlag published his first book, Second Nature, with the series of grisaille based on old postcards (2002–2009). He later expanded his repertoire to include digital artwork. He uses photographs, film stills and screenshots as the basis for oil painting.

Technical aspects are an impressionistic compression of the paint application as well as the blurring in places. Despite the blurring, the picture remains on the level of the narrative without seeking the transition to abstraction . Titles are part of the story that appears to the viewer.

As a classical painter, Lukas Salzmann is committed to representationalism, but conveys a worldview based on a complex reality.
