"Old church"

The Lutherkirche of the Lutherkirchgemeinde at Annaberger Straße 469 was built between 1906 and 1908 in the Harthau district of Chemnitz because the old church of Harthau had become too small. Despite the only slight damage in World War II , the church had to be fundamentally restored in the 1980s. This high-quality church building with a tower dominating the surroundings , with its fully preserved furnishings and the mountain cemetery with its interesting garden design, is a protected ensemble that is entered in the list of monuments as a listed entity .

history

Since 1539 there was already a stone church in Harthau for the places Harthau, Berbisdorf and Eibenberg . Before that there was already a Romanesque predecessor building, which was archaeologically proven from 1966 to 1968. In 1609 and 1765 it was fundamentally rebuilt and still stands today as the "Old Harthauer Church" on the mountainside behind the rectory. It is also a protected cultural monument and is recorded in the list of monuments with the file number 09204823. They and the surrounding ensemble are characterized as a historically significant church building with a turret that characterizes the townscape , a churchyard with old trees and a few elaborately designed tombs and a newly erected memorial stone for the Bernhard family of manufacturers.

Due to the construction of two spinning mills and other industrial plants in the village, the population of Harthaus grew to 7,000 at the beginning of the 20th century. Although Eibenberg in 1901 and Berbisdorf in 1905 had their own churches, the old church was far too small for the large population. From 1906 to 1908 the new and larger Luther Church was built according to plans by Paul Lange .
