Lutz Kaps

Lutz Kaps (born November 18,  1945 in Leipzig ; † July 21,  2016 ) was a German gymnastics trainer and sports scientist . He was considered "one of the most prominent coaches of the German Gymnastics Association of the GDR " and looked after several Olympic medalists.

Life

Kaps first went  to school in the Leipzig district of Knauthain , from 1957 he attended the children's and youth sports school in Leipzig and passed his Abitur in 1964. Between 1960 and 1964 he did gymnastics in the master class. From 1964 to 1970 Kaps studied at the German University for Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig, then between 1970 and 1977 he was a scientist at the Research Institute for Physical Culture and Sport (FKS). There he dealt in scientific work with topics such as training control, analyzed the technical development in gymnastics on an international level and was involved in an investigation into the "behavior of lactate after gymnastics loads". Kaps is considered to be one of the first gymnastics trainers to use video technology in practice. He used this technical option at the time with the then head trainer of the GDR gymnasts, Peter Weber . During his academic work at the FKS, he also completed specialist training as a translator in Japanese at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1977 to 1990 Kaps was a gymnastics trainer at SC DHfK Leipzig . In addition, he worked for the German Gymnastics Association of the GDR (DTV) and was the association's chief methodologist. Together with Gerhard Falkenstein , he supervised the gymnasts Andreas Bronst and Ralf-Peter Hemmann , who won the silver medal in the team all-around at the 1980 Summer Olympics , Hemmann also became world champion in horse jumping in 1981. Also one of Kaps' protégés was Sven Tippelt , who won silver in the team all-round event at the 1988 Olympic Games and was vice world champion in the team all- around event in 1989.

From 1996 to 1999 he was a coach at the State Gymnastics Association of Saxony-Anhalt and at SV Halle , where he looked after Matthias Fahrig, among others . From 1999 Kaps worked as a trainer for the Westphalian Gymnastics Association and then until 2004 for the Palatinate Gymnastics Association at the state performance center in Oppau . In 2004 Kaps fell seriously ill and had to give up his professional career as a trainer.
