Lycium cooperi is a plant type from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Lycium cooperi is a 0.6 to 2 m high, strong, densely branched shrub that is armed with spines . Its leaves are 1 to 3.5 mm long and 0.4 to 1.3 mm wide and densely glandular or sticky or hairless.

The flowers are five-fold and hermaphroditic. The calyx is bowl-shaped or elongated bell-shaped, hairless or hairy glandular. The calyx tube reaches a length of 4 to 14 mm. The crown is greenish-white with violet colored veins. Their shape is triangular-ovoid. The corolla tube is 8 to 15 mm long, the length of the corolla lobes corresponds to 1/4 to 1/5 of the length of the corolla tube. The stamens are sparsely hairy at the base, the free-standing part is hairless.

The fruit is a greenish-yellow, egg-shaped berry with a constriction and a length of 5 to 10 mm. It contains one to two seeds per carpel in the upper area containing sclerenchyme and five to eight seeds in the lower area.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in North America and occurs there in the US states of Arizona , California and Nevada .

Systematics

Molecular biological studies place the species together with Lycium macrodon , Lycium pallidum , Lycium puberulum and Lycium shockleyi in a clade that is a sister clade to the genus Grabowskia within the genus Lycium .
