Lycium puberulum is a plant type from the genus of Lycium ( Lycium ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

Lycium puberulum is a 1 to 2 m high, sparsely branched, spreading shrub that is armed with spines . The leaves are bluish-green, the hairs also consist of bluish-green trichomes . The leaves reach a length of 6 to 40 mm, the width is 2.5 to 11 mm.

The flowers are hermaphroditic and five-fold. The calyx is bell-shaped and hairless. The calyx tube becomes 5 to 8 mm long, the calyx lobes are about the same or longer. The crown is broadly ovate or vice versa ovoid, pale lavender or greenish in color, the veins are darker. The corolla tube is 7 to 13 mm long, the length of the corolla lobes is 2 to 3 mm. The stamens are hairy along the lower third within the corolla tube, but otherwise hairless.

The fruit is a pale orange-yellow berry with a constriction below the center. The area above the constriction is significantly larger than the lower area. The berry reaches a length of 4 to 9 mm. It contains two to four seeds .

The chromosome number of Lycium puberulum var. Berberidoides is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in North America , where it occurs in the Mexican states of Chihuahua , Coahuila and Durango as well as in the US state of Texas .

Systematics

Internal system

Two varieties are distinguished within the species:

  • Lycium puberulum var. Puberulum
  • Lycium puberulum var. Berberidoides (Correll) F.Chiang

External system

Molecular biological studies place the species together with Lycium cooperi , Lycium macrodon , Lycium pallidum and Lycium shockleyi in a clade that is a sister clade to the genus Grabowskia within the genus Lycium .
