The genus Lymphocryptovirus forms a subgroup of the subfamily of Gammaherpesviruses ( Gammaherpesvirinae ) . These in turn belong to the herpes virus family ( Herpesviridae ) . "Lympho" refers to the lymphotropism of this group of viruses . κρύπτω ( ancient Greek = to hide) refers to the ability to "latency", which is common to all herpes viruses, i. H. these viruses can apparently remain inactive in the organism for a long time, and then "come back to life" later.
Lymphocryptoviruses include (as of March 2019):
Species Callitrichine gammaherpesvirus 3 (alias marmoset herpesvirus 1 , CavlHV-1)
Species Cercopithecine gammaherpesvirus 14 (infects cheekbones monkeys )
Species Gorilline gammaherpesvirus 1 (alias Gorilla Herpesvirus , Pongines Herpesvirus 3 , PoHV-3)
Species Human gammaherpesvirus 4 (alias Humanes herpesvirus 4 , Epstein-Barr virus , EBV, type species)
Species Macacine gammaherpesvirus 4 (infected macaques )
Species Macacine gammaherpesvirus 10 (infected macaques)
Species Panine gammaherpesvirus 1 (alias chimpanzee herpesvirus , Pongines herpesvirus 1 , PoHV-1)
Species Papiine gammaherpesvirus 1 (infects baboons)
Species Pongine gammaherpesvirus 2 (aka orangutan herpesvirus , Pongines herpesvirus 2 , PoHV-2)
It used to be the opinion that lymphocryptoviruses were only found in old world monkeys (Catarrhini). Since the discovery of EBV-like gamma herpes viruses in New World monkeys (Plathyrrhini), this view has become obsolete.
