The Gammaherpesvirinae form a subfamily of the virus family Herpesviridae . Due to their special property of stimulating lymphocytes to divide when they multiply , the Gammaherpesvirinae are also known as the "lymphoproliferative virus group". Due to this property, gamma herpes viruses, in contrast to alpha and beta herpes viruses, can also trigger malignant diseases (e.g. EBV: Burkitt's lymphoma , HHV-8: Kaposi's sarcoma ).
