Costa began playing drums at the age of six and took classical drum lessons from the age of eight. During his training at the local vocational school for musicians, he discovered contemporary composers of the 20th century such as John Cage , Steve Reich and Iannis Xenakis . In 2004 he began a university education as a jazz drummer at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo in Porto, which he graduated in 2008. He then trained in master classes in New York City and in the International Summer Workshop in Siena.

In 2010 he was invited by the Casa da Música concert hall in Porto to present his own project, Mário Costa - Homo Sapiens . It was then that he began working with Émile Parisien , to whose quintet Sfumato he has been a member since 2015 and with whom he has released two albums. Through his participation in two albums by the double bass player Hugo Carvalhais ( Nebulosa and Particula , both on Clean Feed ), Costa became known to national and international critics; in the band of Carvalhais he appeared with the saxophonists Tim Berne , Liudas Mockūnas , the pianist Gabriel Pinto and the violinist Dominique Pifarély . He also worked with various formations such as the Ensemble Super Modern and the Orquestra de Jazz de Matosinhos, as well as with Gileno Santana ( Home 2011, Metamorphosis 2014), Carlos Azevedo and Sérgio Carolino. He also accompanied the songwriters Miguel Araújo and António Zambujo as well as the fado singer Ana Moura (also on a world tour where she presented her jazz-influenced album Desfado ).
