Mário Fernandes da Graça Machungo

Mário Fernandes da Graça Machungo (born December 1, 1940 in Maxixe , Inhambane Province , † February 17, 2020 in Lisbon , Portugal ) was Mozambican Prime Minister (1986 to 1994).

He attended the Technical University of Lisbon in the 1960s , where he graduated in economics. He then worked as an employee in a Lisbon bank. He then moved to the University of Lourenço Marques as a lecturer, where he quickly made a career. As a FRELIMO activist, he became cabinet minister in his country in various offices after the Portuguese withdrew in 1975. From 1975 to 1976 he was Minister for Industry and Trade, from 1976 to 1978 Minister for Industry and Energy, from 1978 to 1980 Minister of Agriculture and from 1980 to 1986 Minister for Planning and Development. From 1983 was also governor of the province of Zambezia . From July 17, 1986 to December 16, 1994, he was Prime Minister of Mozambique. During this time, the former Marxist FRELIMO decided to give up the one-party system and in 1989 for the first time allowed other parties to vote. From 1995, Mário Machungo was head of the country's largest bank, the Millennium bim (Banco Internacional de Moçambique).
