The defective copy is the literary film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Sarah Kuttner . Directed by Laura Lackmann . Claudia Eisinger , Katja Riemann , Barbara Schöne , Laura Tonke and Maren Kroymann can be seen in the leading roles . The film opened in German cinemas on May 12, 2016.

Karo suffers a breakdown after she loses her job and her relationship with her boyfriend Philipp does not work either. She seeks out the psychotherapist Annette and hopes to use therapy to solve her emotional conflicts and panic attacks. After particularly severe nocturnal anxiety attacks, Karo receives support from her mother and grandmother, a short-term move to her mother and an antidepressant help her in the recovery process. Over the weeks and months, Karo tries to mend her relationship with her best friend Anna. In addition, a love affair develops with her good friend Max, who takes care of Karo.

Heike Hupertz describes the film in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as “a fast film with funny images”. Julia Dettke also calls the film a “strong directorial debut” in the Tagesspiegel with “a leading actress who is remembered and an overall quite outstanding ensemble”. In the Spiegel , Eva Thöne criticizes the superficiality of the film and the missed “opportunity to draw an individually plausible portrait of a depressed woman”.
