The Mühlwasser is a 7.0 km long, right tributary of the Lauter in the Thuringian Forest , on the northwest border of the independent city of Suhl to Zella-Mehlis and to the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen . The river forms in its course from its source on the north-west slope of the Wildekopf in west-north-west, south-west and finally south to the B 247 for more than half of its length approximately the municipality boundary .
The fan of the Mühlwasser represents the western half of the fan of its receiving water Lauter, which in turn occupies the northeast of the fan of the Hasel , within which Lauter-Oberlauf and Mühlwasser are important main arms. Essential characteristics of the Lauter system also apply in particular to the mill water and its tributaries.
The average bed gradient of the named Mühlwasser is 5.8% in the order of magnitude of that of the Lauter upper reaches to the Mühlwasser estuary.
