Munich street signs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Overview of types of street signs in Munich

The characteristic Munich street signs are enamel panels with white letters on a blue background. They arrived early, probably at the beginning of the 20th century. The zinc cast plates , which are widespread elsewhere , either did not exist at all or none have been preserved. The first street signs in Munich were wooden panels that were attached to street corners in 1801.

Even if most of the street name signs in Munich today have a uniform design, there have been significantly different design versions over the years.

Signs in antiqua script with pronounced serifs

Type 1 road sign

Antiqua typeface with pronounced serifs , in some cases presumably from the period from 1910 onwards, certainly before the First World War.

Signs in contrasting antiqua script

Type 2 road sign

The contrast between hairlines and shadows is much more pronounced compared to Type 1, "Street" is always written out. Also characteristic is the "ß" with the descender on the right.

Signs in closely set antiqua script

Type 3 road sign

Presumably in use since the late 1920s. Could have been in use until the introduction of the current font (see Type 7), with an interruption by the Gothic font in Type 4. Compared to the one from Type 2, the "ß" has a pronounced descender on the left. The font is a bit narrower than Type 2, and “Straße” is also always written out.

Signs in black letters

Type 4 road sign

Signs in Textura , Schwabacher and Fraktur script , probably from the late twenties or early thirties. There are only relatively few signs in the cityscape.

Signs in antiqua script without decorative frames

Road sign type 5

The introduction date may be in the 1950s. Already has the current font (see Type 7), but the blue is very dark. In addition, there is no white decorative frame .

Signs in sans serif

Type 6 road sign

The panels are not made of enamel , are not cambered and have rounded corners. The font is the Münchener Verkehrsschrift , a derivative of the Univers font , which was introduced on the occasion of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games . Otl Aicher was responsible for the redesign of the original font .

Type 6 road sign (Olympic version) Type 6 road sign (Olympic version)

In the Munich Traffic signature and underground labels, destination signs of trams were running, etc. until recently, until the Munich Transport Company (MVG) to 2002, the "Vialog" -Schrift introduced. In particular, the old town, Neuperlach (no longer) and the area around the Olympic Park were generously equipped with this type of sign. Later, however, the conservative Munich residents asked for their old enamel boards back, so that this type has not dominated the streetscape for a long time.

Special version of the sans serif letters in the Olympic Park

In the Olympic Park there are two signs that have unique characteristics in terms of their appearance: it is a sans serif in small caps, which is applied in white on a background in the typical Olympic blue. The signs have a decorative frame as with Type 7 and are significantly larger than usual.

Other types of signs

In addition to the types above, there is a multitude of obviously private street signs, not all of which can be listed here.

In the case of the following signs, however, it is assumed that these could also have been part of official types:

So far only known location:

  1. Maria-Ward-Straße (at the western end of the dead-end street at house number 1)

Housing grotesque

Housing grotesque

The design is very similar to the signs of the Northwest Grotesque, but not cambered and almost exclusively attached to post-war apartment buildings. Presumably these are installed by the relevant housing association and not by the state capital Munich. The DIN font is used , which is very common on German road signs.
