Muslum M ə h ə mmäd oğlu Maqomayev ( Russian Абдул-Муслим Магомет оглы Магомаев * 18th September 1885 in Grozny , Russian Empire ; † 28. July 1937 in Nalchik , Kabardino-Balkar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic , Soviet Union ) was an Azerbaijani composer and Conductor .

life and work

Müslüm Maqomayev's father was a blacksmith. In his childhood he played folk music and learned to play the accordion. He attended the teachers' college in Gori from 1899 to 1904 . Here he met Üzeyir Hacıbəyov , who was the same age . Maqomayev showed great interest in music. He learned the violin and oboe. As a violinist, he was one of the pillars of the seminar's orchestra, which he also directed as a conductor. In addition, he made his first musical compositions. From 1905 to 1911 he taught in the North Caucasus and Lənkəran . During this time he founded a choir, a brass and a string orchestra and a theater group. In 1911 he went to Baku on the advice of Hacıbəyov, taught in Sabunçu and worked as a violinist in the opera theater. He became one of Hacıb Hyov's closest advisers and, like Hacıbəyov, devoted himself to the development of Azerbaijani musical theater. The relationship with Hacıbəyov became even closer when both sisters of Ali Teregulov, an acquaintance of the same age from the time in Tbilisi, married. Maqomayev married Badiguljamal Teregulova and Hacıbəyov Maleyke Khanum Teregulova. From 1912 he conducted opera performances and thus became one of the first opera conductors in Azerbaijan. He also created works for music theater himself. So in 1916 the opera Şah İsmayıl . In addition to the symphonic works Azərbaycan çöllərində, Azad olunmuş Azərbaycan qadınının rəqsi, Dərviş, Marş RV-8 and Şəlalə , he also wrote chamber music works . Together with Hacıbəyov he published the folk song collection Azərbaycan turk el nəğmələri in 1927 and contributed about 300 songs and dances. His organizational talent enabled him to pursue a career after the changes brought about by the Russian Revolution . From 1921 to 1924 head of the arts department of the Azerbaijani People's Commissariat for Education. From 1924 to 1929 he was the head and conductor of the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet House . From 1929 he was and head of the music department of the Azerbaijani Broadcasting Center. In 1935 his opera Nərgiz was successfully performed and he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Azerbaijani Soviet Socialist Republic . The satirical, musical comedy Xoruz bəy and the ballet Dali Mukhtar were performed. An opera was left unfinished.

The State Philharmonic Society of Azerbaijan is named after him. He was buried in the Fəxri Xiyaban Honorary Cemetery in Baku. His grandson, the singer Müslüm Maqomayev , was named after him.
