Maruti Ram Pedaprolu Murty , quoted by M. Ram Murty, (born October 16, 1953 in Guntur , India ) is an Indo-Canadian mathematician who deals with number theory.

Murty received his PhD in 1980 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under Harold Stark ( Artin's Conjecture and Non-Abelian Sieves ). From 1982 he was at McGill University and since 1996 he has been a professor at Queen's University in Kingston (Ontario) (on a Canada Research Chair).

He deals with number theory and modular forms , for example sieving methods, Artin's conjecture about primitive roots , L-functions , the Langlands program , number theory of elliptic curves , Ramanujan graphs. In 1984 he and Rajeev Gupta showed using sieving methods that Artin's conjecture about primitive roots is true for an infinite number of numbers.

He has been a member of the Royal Society of Canada since 1990 and of the National Academy of Sciences (India) since 2007. In 2003 he received the Canadian Jefferey Williams Prize and in 1988 the Coxeter-James Prize. In 1996 he and V. Kumar Murty received the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .

His brother V. Kumar Murty, with whom he also published, is a professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto .
