MAC - Museum Art & Cars
The MAC Museum Art & Cars is located at the foot of the Hohentwiel mountain in Singen , Germany . In the two museum buildings MAC 1 and MAC 2, vintage cars are exhibited in dialogue with art on a total of more than four thousand m² . The MAC 1 fulfills the task of preserving the assets of the Südwestdeutsche Kunststiftung and making them accessible to the public. The MAC 2 shows international light art, video mapping and photography.
history
The Südwestdeutsche Kunststiftung was founded in 1993 with the aim of not only collecting the region’s artistic work, but also presenting it appropriately. The board consists of the couple Hermann Maier and Gabriela Unbehaun-Maier and the Singener Mayor Bernd Häusler . Their holdings have grown to three thousand objects of classical and contemporary art. The Maier couple provided the necessary capital for the construction of the MAC Museum Art & Cars, while the city of Singen contributed the property at Parkstrasse 1 to the foundation.
The museum concept was to create a synthesis between art, automobile and architecture under the principle of uniquely different . The MAC 1 of the MAC Museum Art & Cars was built for the 20th anniversary of the Südwestdeutsche Kunststiftung and opened on November 21, 2013 with the exhibition Wachgeküsst . The aim was to make the museum the home of the Südwestdeutsche Kunststiftung. The regular changing exhibitions offered an overview of the three thousand exhibits of the foundation, the automobiles collector's items and presented international artists.
A few months after the opening of the MAC 1 with around one thousand m² of exhibition space, the idea arose to expand the museum with a second building with more than three thousand square meters in order to be able to show even more automobile rarities and art on a larger area . For this purpose, the couple Gabriela Unbehaun-Maier and Hermann Maier founded the Gabriela and Hermann Maier Foundation and had the MAC 2 built in around two and a half years. The opening was celebrated on June 22nd and 23rd, 2019.
building
The buildings of the MAC 1 and MAC 2 were built according to designs by the Gottmadingen architect Daniel Binder. The curved, earth-colored building of MAC 1 is an idea by Daniel Binder, who uses the architecture to create a connection with Singen's local mountain, Hohentwiel, and its castle ruins. For the MAC 2, too, Daniel Binder oriented himself towards the immediate vicinity of the museum building. With the appearance of two boulders that fell from the local mountain Hohentwiel and came to rest on the Aach - so the underlying idea - the ensemble is now complete.
