Companion of Dwingeloo 1

The MB 3 is a spheroidal dwarf galaxy in the constellation Cassiopeia at the northern sky . It is estimated to be 9 million light years from the Milky Way and about 7,000 ly in diameter.

MB 3 is a satellite galaxy of Dwingeloo 1 and is located in the Galactic Plane of the Milky Way, the so-called Zone of Avoidance , which makes observation much more difficult.

The object was discovered in 1997 during an optical survey by the Maffei group .

properties

The dwarf galaxy is a member of the Maffei Group, a galaxy group in the vicinity of the Local Group . The visible diameter of MB 3 is approximately 1.9 arc minutes , which corresponds to an absolute value of about 2 kpc at its distance of non 3 M pc .

Optical images show it as a flattened, oval and diffuse nebula about 9.2 arc minutes away from Dwingeloo 1. No molecular or neutral hydrogen gas could be detected in the dwarf galaxy, matching the classification as a spheroid dwarf galaxy.
