Maarten Schops (born April 15, 1973 in Leuven ) is a former Belgian football player and current coach . He is currently the head coach of BSV Rehden .
Career
As a player
Schops played in the Netherlands from summer 1996 after completing his training in his Belgian homeland . For Roda JC Kerkrade , RKC Waalwijk , RBC Roosendaal and PEC Zwolle , the midfielder made 140 games in the Eredivisie , in which he scored eleven goals and six assists.
At the age of 29, the Belgian went to Germany and from then on played low-class for BV Cloppenburg , BSV Rehden and TuS Sulingen . He played 264 games, the majority of them in fourth-rate leagues, and scored 16 goals for his clubs. In his last season for BSV Cloppenburg, he led its first team as captain. His last two years Schops was in the sixth class Landesliga Hannover with TuS Sulingen, where he ended his active career in July 2015.
As a trainer
Schops had already gained experience on the sidelines as a player in Rehden and Sulingen. Immediately after the end of his career, he took over the first team of TuS Sulingen from Walter Brinkmann as head coach. For the 2017/18 season , as a state league champion, he was promoted to the fifth-class Oberliga Niedersachsen , where, however, the class could not be held. In the summer of 2019, Schops ended his engagement in Sulingen.
The Belgian returned to Rehden at the beginning of 2020; at the regional league team he succeeded Heiner Backhaus , who had switched to SG Sonnenhof Großaspach .
