Location of Maasniel in the city of Roermond |
Maasniel ( Neel in Limburg ) is a district of Roermond and a former village in the Dutch province of Limburg . It was an independent municipality until 1959 and then became a district of Roermond. Maasniel has had its own place-name signs again since 2004.
The municipality of Maasniel consisted of the villages Maasniel, Leeuwen , Asenray and the hamlets of Broekhin, Spik, Straat, Maalbroek , Thusershof and Gebroek.
The Maasnielderbeek flows through Maasniel and is canalised in the village as far as Leeuwen. In the village, the brook follows the streets Eiermarkt , Beekweg , Wilhelminalaan , Schouwberg and Burgemeester Thomas Wackersstraat to flow from the Borgeind through the last fields to the Maas . The Donderberg and Hoogvonderen also belong to the Maasniel municipality.
history
In pre-Christian times there was a cult site of Thor , the Donderberg , south of Maasniel .
Maasniel is mentioned for the first time in a document of the Bishop of Utrecht from the year 943. There “Nieol” is mentioned, and even if it is not certain that Maasniel is meant, this is very likely.
From the 13th century, the former municipality of Maasniel was part of the Daelenbroek rule, which had its seat in the castle of the same name near Herkenbosch . This belonged to the upper quarter of Obergeldern and was then successively Spanish and Austrian (or Belgian ). In French times it belonged to the Belgian department of Nedermaas .
The rural community of Maasniel became part of Roermond in 1959. That was the first major incorporation in the Limburg province. Maasniel's independence had been seriously jeopardized four times before, but the process accelerated during the modernization of the Limburg province. Massniel became aware of his peculiarities as they began to disappear. In response to this, local peculiarities and symbols began to be emphasized.
character
Despite the incorporation, Maasniel still has a very unique character, which is kept alive considerably by the club life:
- Maasniel Philharmonic
- Schützenverein St.Urbanus (this rifle club succeeded in winning the Oud Limburgs Schuttersfeest for the first time in 2014 after a long competition, which is why it had to organize this festival in 2015.)
- Amateur schutterij St.Lerang
- SVC 2000 football club
- Swift 2000 handball club
- Basketball club Ready '60
- Carnival Association De Katers
- Carnival Association De Neelder Garde
- Scouting Society St. Jorisgroep
- TCM tennis club
That Maasniel's own character is still alive is also proven by the saying (in Limburgs): Neel is Neel, en Neel blief Neel (in German: Maasniel is Maasniel and Maasniel remains Maasniel ).
Attractions
Striking buildings in the village are the Laurentiuskirche, which was rebuilt around 1950 after being completely devastated in the Second World War . "De Thooren", a castle restored in 1990 with an old horse stable and surrounding moat, the origin of which probably dates back to the 15th century. The castle “De Tegelarije”, which dates back to the 17th century.
In the past, the place was best known for its two large brickworks, after which the district Brikkenoven (Limburg for stone oven) is named, where many stones were baked thanks to the loamy subsoil. There was also a brewery called “De Leeuw” (“the lion”).
Maasniel has grown enormously since the 1960s and is flowing over to Roermond. The districts of Tegelarijeveld, Brikkenoven, De Wijher and De Heuvel form a large part of Maasniel.
Maasniel was also affected by the construction of the new Autobahn 73 , which runs from Venlo to Maasbracht . The expressway runs past Maasniel in the northeast. Along with the Schnellweg came a retail park in the Maasniel area.
