Mabel Lang

Mabel Louise Lang (born November 12, 1917 in Utica , New York , † July 21, 2010 in Bryn Mawr , Pennsylvania ) was an American classical philologist , ancient historian and classical archaeologist .

Lang grew up in Hamilton, New York . She received a bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1939 and a master's degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1940 , where she also received her doctorate in 1943. In the same year her career began teaching at Bryn Mawr College, where she was Professor of Ancient Greek ( Paul Shorey Professor of Greek ) since 1971 . Her interests were in Greek history and epigraphy . She retired in 1988.

As a research assistant at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens , she took part in excavations on the Acropolis and the Agora . In the 1950s and 60s she was involved in excavations in Gordion , Turkey , and the Palace of Nestor , the Mycenaean Pylos, near the present-day city of Pylos .

honors and awards

Lang received honorary doctorates from the College of the Holy Cross (1975), Colgate University (1978) and Hamilton College (1989). She was a member of the American Philosophical Society , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the German Archaeological Institute .
