Maca Maca is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Maca Maca is the second largest town in the Caracato canton in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Sapahaqui in the Loayza province . The village of Maca Maca is located at an altitude of 2694  m in the northern foothills of the Serranía de Sicasica on the Río Ticoma , which joins two kilometers downstream with the Río Sapahaqui to the Río Caracato .

Maca Maca lies between the Bolivian Altiplano in the west and the Amazon lowlands in the east. The region has a typical daytime climate in which the mean temperature differences between day and night are greater than the temperature differences between the seasons.

The mean average temperature of the region is just under 15 ° C and fluctuates between 11 and 12 ° C in June / July and a good 16 ° C in November (see Luribay climate diagram). Annual precipitation is 600 mm, with a pronounced dry season from May to August and monthly precipitation of more than 100 mm in January and February.

Transport network

Maca Maca is located 107 kilometers by road southeast of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz, the paved highway Ruta 1 leads south via El Alto to the south. Twelve kilometers south of El Alto, a country road branches off to the southwest and follows the Río Cala Jahuira twenty kilometers upstream. From there a dirt road branches off to the northeast, after 35 kilometers it reaches the village of Sapahaqui and continues down the Río Sapahaqui via Tacobamba and Caracato to Maca Maca for a further 27 kilometers .

Due to the historical population development, the Aymara population is predominant in the region , in the municipality of Sapahaqui 96.7 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
