The Macdonald River is a river in the northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales .

It is a headwaters of the Namoi River and rises east of Niangala on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in the northern table country of New England . From there, the Macdonald River flows northwest to the confluence of its main tributary, the Cobrabald River . It flows through the towns Woolbrook and Bendemeer , and the Warrabah National Park , where he in the Namoi River flows .

The Macdonald River and its tributaries above the bridge of the New England Highway at Bendemeer are considered good fishing water for trout .

The Namoi River turtle (Bell's turtle) is endemic to the upper reaches of the Namoi River, Gwydir River and Macdonald River.

Since 1985 the New England Highway has passed Bendemeer and crossed the Macdonald River on the new TA Perry Bridge .

On November 28-29, 2008, heavy rains triggered a flood of the Macdonald River, which meant that a state of emergency had to be declared in the area.
