Madras is a city in the United States and is located in Jefferson County , Oregon, whose county seat it is also. The place was originally named "The Basin" after the valley in which it is located. The genesis of the name Madras for the city is not clear.

At the 2010 census , the city had a population of 6,046.

history

In 1911 Madras received city rights. During World War II , an airfield was built for the Army Air Corps , which was used to train pilots for the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and the Bell P-63 Kingcobra.

The National Park Service lists a 58 house in the National Register of Historic Places for Madras (as of January 16, 2019), the Max and Ollie Lueddemann House .

Madras is located at the intersection of US Highway 26, which runs in an east-west direction, and US Highway 97, which runs in a north-south direction .

A BNSF railway line passes the city in a north-south direction.

air

With the Madras Municipal Airport (IATA: MDJ, FAA LID: S33) located approx. 6 km to the northwest, the city has an airport for general aviation . This houses a collection of historic aircraft that was on display in Tillamook (Oregon) in the Tillamook Air Museum until 2013 . The airfield also hosts the Airshow of the Cascades every year. There are also two racetracks on the western edge of the airport: the Madras Speedway and the Madras Dragstrip. The connection to commercial scheduled flights is via the Roberts Field Airport in Redmond (Oregon), which is about 40 km south .
