Maduranthakam ( Tamil : மதுராந்தகம் Maturāntakam [ mad̪ɯˌɾaːn̪d̪əɡʌm ]; also Maduranthakam, Maduranthagam, Madhuranthakam ) is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu with around 31,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
Maduranthakam is located around 80 kilometers southwest of Chennai (Madras) in the hinterland of the coast of the Bay of Bengal on the shores of Lake Maduranthakam . The city is the capital of the Taluk Maduranthakam in the Kanchipuram district . The next largest cities are Chengalpattu 24 kilometers north and Tindivanam 42 kilometers south.
The National Highway 45 (Grand Southern Trunk Road), one of Tamil Nadu's most important arteries , runs through Maduranthakam . The city is also connected to the railway network via the Chennai – Tiruchirappalli line.
Maduranthakam is named after the Chola ruler Uttama Chola (973–985), who was nicknamed Madurantaka ("Destroyer Madurais "). In Maduranthakam is the Eri-Katha-Ramar temple dedicated to the god Rama . The famous Hindu philosopher Ramanuja received his initiation in this temple in the 11th century .
89 percent of Maduranthakam's residents are Hindus , 7 percent Muslim and 3 percent Christian . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 90 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 5 percent speak Telugu and 4 percent speak Urdu .
