The Mae Nam Loei ( Thai : แม่น้ำ เลย , "Loei River", pronunciation: [mɛ̂ː náːm lɤːj] ), or just Loei , is a tributary of the Mekong . The river source is located in northeast Thailand on the western edge of the 848 km 2 Phu Luang Plateau in the districts ( Amphoe ) Wang Saphung , Phu Ruea , Dan Sai and Phu Luang . From there the Loei initially flows southwards. Eventually the direction of flow changes to the east and becomes the natural border between the provinces of Loei and Phetchabun . After flowing around Mount Phu Ho, it changes direction north and reaches the provincial capital Loei . From here the river runs 47 kilometers north to the border town of Chiang Khan , where it flows into the Mekong.
