Magda Olivero

Magda Olivero (born March 25, 1910 in Saluzzo , † September 8, 2014 in Milan ) was an Italian opera singer (soprano).

Life

After studying at the Turin Conservatory, she made her debut there in 1933 at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele as Lauretta in the opera Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini . She has performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and the Teatro Verdi in Trieste. In 1938 she worked for the Italian record label Cetra in a complete recording of the opera Turandot by Puccini as Liù. After her marriage in 1941, she gave up her career.

In 1951 she posthumously fulfilled the wish of the composer Francesco Cilea and took over the title role of his opera Adriana Lecouvreur . The success of this performance moved the singer to resume her career after a ten-year break. She has now appeared again at the Teatro alla Scala, but also in London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, Dallas, in the Arena di Verona and at the Vienna State Opera .

In 1975, now at the age of 65, she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York in the title role of Puccini's Tosca . She continued her career into old age and appeared in 1990 at the Jesi Opera as Adriana Lecouvreur .
