Magnolia Antonino

Magnolia Welborn Antonino (birth name Magnolia Rodriguez Welborn ; born December 14, 1915 in Balaoan , La Union province ; † July 22, 2010 ) was a Filipino entrepreneur , manager and politician who was a member of the Senate for several years .

Life

Born Magnolia Rodriguez Welborn, she first attended state schools in Balaoan and La Union High School and then the Philippine Normal School, which she graduated in 1934. Afterwards she was first a teacher of housekeeping in La Union, but a short time later became a senior teacher at the Balaoan Elementary School . Subsequently, between 1936 and 1941, she was school councilor for housekeeping for the provinces of Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental . She later married the businessman Gaudencio Antonino , who was also a senator for some time.

After the marriage, she joined her husband's business, the construction company Antonino Construction Enterprises , and was an accountant there between 1946 and 1953 . In addition, she was initially authorized signatory and then manager of the Western Mindanao Lumber Company as well as managing director of Gaudencio E. Antonino Incorporated . She was also Treasurer of the Polytechnic Colleges of the Philippines and Director of the Philippine Commercial and Instrial Bank and the Luzon Cement Corporation.

In the mid- 1960s she began a political career and was a member of the House of Representatives between 1965 and 1969, where she represented the first constituency of the La Union province.

After her husband died on November 13, 1967, she ran for the Nacionalista Party in his place for a seat in the Senate and was elected. Magnolia Antonino was senator from 1969 until the dissolution of the Senate after the imposition of martial law by the dictatorial ruling President Ferdinand Marcos on September 21 1,972th

During her Senate membership, she was instrumental in laws such as the Law Fixing Maximum Prices for Basic Goods and Commodities and the Establishment of the Price Control Council (Republic Act RA 6124), the law banning explosive, flammable, caustic and toxic substances on board commercial aircraft and the regulation of the provisions for the transport of such substances on board cargo aircraft (RA 6235) and the law on the consolidation and revision of the National Energy Company (RA 6395). In addition, she worked on laws to promote women and children as well as for farmers by increasing rice and grain production.

In the course of her life she was also involved in numerous social and charitable organizations such as the Inner Wheel Club of Manila (WYCA), the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of Manila , the Philippine Band of Mercy and the Philippine Garden Club.
