History
In the early 1800s, Spanish settlers settled in the area as part of a state land grant. After the end of the American Civil War , the place attracted new residents. The name of the town, which was originally Magnolia Springs Plantation , was a combination of two local features, the never-ending springs ("Springs") and the numerous magnolia trees that lined many streets. The center of the place was the Magnolia River, on which the mail was also transported. A turpentine manufacturing industry soon developed, attracting residents from other states. In 1885 the first branch of the United States Postal Service opened . The Foley train station, which had not been in operation since 1971, was relocated to Magnolia Springs and used as a warehouse. In 1991, however, it returned to Foley as a gift, was renovated and now serves as a museum. In 2006 the place received an independent municipal administration. Recently, a tourism industry is also developing, and Magnolia Springs focuses on the water from the springs and advertises with the slogan “the purest springs in the world”.
