Mahavir Tyagi

Mahavir Tyagi ( Hindi : महावीर त्यागी ; Panjabi : ਮਹਾਵੀਰ ਤਿਆਗੀ * 31 December 1899 in Dhabarsi, Moradabad district , Bengal Presidency , British India ; † 22. May 1980 in New Delhi ) was an Indian politician of the Indian National Congress (INC ), who was among other things a minister in various Union governments.

Life

Mahavir Tyagi, son of Shiv Nathji, completed his school education at Nanakchand High School in Meerut as well as with private teachers. During the First World War he served as a member of the British Indian Army in eastern Persia and in 1920 he joined Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent campaign for India's independence . As a result, he was withdrawn from Balochistan and his wages suspended before he was finally released from military service following a decision by the military court. Because of his political commitment, he was arrested several times and spent seven and a half years in prison. For 39 years he was a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), the presidium of the INC.

After India gained independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947, Tyagi became a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly , of which he was a member for nine years. He was also a member of the Constituent Assembly and the Provisional Parliament of India from December 6, 1946 to January 24, 1950, before joining the Indian National Congress (INC) in the first election from October 25, 1951 to February 21, 1952 Member of Lok Sabha , the lower house of the Indian Parliament (Bhāratīya saṃsa) was elected. He was a member of this after his re-election in the election between February 24 and March 15, 1957 and the election from February 19 to 25, 1962 to the election from February 15 to 21, 1967 , where he represented the state of Uttar Pradesh lying constituency of Dehra Dun .

On May 13, 1952, Tyagi was Minister of Income and Expenditures in the second cabinet of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and held this office until a cabinet reshuffle on March 16, 1953, whereupon Bezawada Gopala Reddy took his place. He himself then acted in the second Nehru cabinet between March 16, 1953 and April 5, 1957 as Minister for Defense Organization. In this function he went to the Federal Republic of Germany in mid-September 1955 , where he held a reception with Vice Chancellor Franz Blücher to discuss the closer development of cultural and economic relations between the two countries. In June 1962 he succeeded CR Pattabhiraman as chairman of the Lok Sabha Committee on Public Accounts and held this position until he was replaced by RK Khadilkar in 1963.

In the cabinet of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, he held the post of Minister for Rehabilitation between June 9, 1964 and January 13, 1966. On March 15, 1968, he was appointed as the successor to PV Rajamannar by President Zakir Hussain to chair the Fifth Finance Commission (Fifth Finance Commission) and held this position until 1973, after which Kasu Brahmananda Reddy was his successor. He was also from April 3, 1970 to April 2, 1976 member of the Rayja Sabha , the upper house of parliament.

His marriage to Sharmada Tyagi had three daughters.
