Bezawada Gopala Reddy ( Telugu బెజవాడ గోపాలరెడ్డి ; alternative spelling of the name: Bezwada Gopala Reddi ; born August 5, 1907 in Buchireddipalem , Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore , Andhra Pradesh , British India ; † March 9, 1997 in Chennai , Tamil Nadu ) was an Indian politician the Indian National Congress (INC), which was a member of both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha . He was also a Minister, between 1955 and 1956 Chief Minister of Andhra and from 1967 to 1962 Governor of Uttar Pradesh .

Life

Studies, arrests and ministers in Madras

Reddy, son of B. Pattabhi Rami Reddi, studied at Andhra National College in Machilipatnam and at Visva-Bharati University in Shantiniketan after attending school . At the beginning of the 1930s he began his political engagement and was arrested for the first time in 1932 for his work for the independence of India. In 1931 he became a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), the presidium of the INC, and secretary of the INC in Andhra Pradesh , before he was arrested again in 1932. In 1937 he was elected for the first time as a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Madras Presidency , to which he initially belonged until 1939. At the same time, between 1937 and 1939 was also Minister for Local Government in the government of C. Rajagopalachari , the first chief minister of Madras appointed by the Congress Party. After he was arrested again in 1940 and 1942 for his political engagement, he was re-elected to the legislative assembly of the Madras presidency in 1946.

After India gained independence on August 15, 1947 and the state of Madras was founded, the first Chief Minister of Madras Omandur Ramaswami Reddiar appointed him as Minister of Finance in the state government, who he was also in the subsequent cabinet of Chief Minister PS Kumaraswamy Raja until April 9 1952 belonged. In the government of his successors he was Minister of the Interior from 1956 to 1957 and then Minister of Finance between 1957 and 1958.

On August 18, 1958, Reddy became a member of the Rajya Sabha , which represents the interests of the states and union territories as the second chamber of parliament , and belonged to them until February 27, 1962 for the state of Andhra Pradesh. In 1958, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru appointed him as Minister of Economics in his third cabinet . After a government reshuffle, he served in this cabinet from April 1961 to April 2, 1962 as Minister for Public Works, Housing and Utilities. In 1961 he served as treasurer of the Rabindranath Tagore Centenary Celebration Committee .

Member of Lok Sabha and Governor of Uttar Pradesh

In 1962 Reddy was elected to the INC in the constituency of Kavali in Andhra Pradesh as a member of the first chamber of parliament, the Lok Sabha , and was a member of this until 1967. After the elections, on April 2, 1962, Prime Minister Nehru appointed him as Minister of Information and Broadcasting in his fourth cabinet , and held this ministerial office until 1963.

On May 1, 1967, Reddy finally replaced Biswanath Das as governor of Uttar Pradesh and remained in this office until June 30, 1972, when Shashi Kant Verma succeeded him. He was also active as President of the Sahitya Akademi and the All India Chess Federation (AICF) at times.

His marriage to Shrimati B. Lakshimkanthamma on May 8, 1938 resulted in two sons and a daughter.
