The Mainz Carneval Association 1838 eV ( MCV ) was the city of Mainz's first carnival association . history

The Mainz Carneval Association was founded on January 19, 1838 .

The starting point of the modern carnival in Mainz was the strengthening of the bourgeoisie after the fall of the Old Empire at the beginning of the 19th century and the strong economic ties to Cologne , where a reform of the carnival took place in 1823, which for the first time provided for meetings and a large procession on Rose Monday.

The Mainz based on the Cologne model , admittedly not without emphasizing contrasts. When countercurrents to Carnival appeared in Cologne , the Mainz Fastnacht organized a parade in 1837 under the name “Krähwinkler Landsturm”, at which the oldest corporation of the Mainz Carnival, the later Mainz Ranzengarde, first appeared.

In 1838 the citizens of Mainz decided to celebrate Carnival "in better order and with more noble taste" . On February 9, 1838, the association applied for a “ Carnival Monday procession ”, which first took place on February 26, 1838. A first “foolish general assembly” , to which the Mainzer Zeitung issued an invitation on January 24, 1838 , took place in the hall of the Roman King in Grebenstrasse.

Prominent members of the MCV in the 20th century were Ernst Neger , who sang the famous song Humba Täterä , and Willi Scheu , who performed as Bajazz with the lantern .

In the first decades of the Mainz Carnival, the campaigns had to be approved by the authorities of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt every year . Accordingly, the MCV, which organized the campaigns, had to be re-established every year. As a result, the presidents of the MCV changed practically annually until the 1880s. From the 1860s onwards, there were repeated double or even triple presidencies, as the association and meeting presidents often shared the work. It was not until the 1880s that these official requirements relaxed and the chairpersons were given longer terms of office. From 1925, "the long periods" of the presidency began with Heinrich Bender. But it was not until 1947 that the club presidency was completely decoupled from the activity of the meeting president.
