politics

Dumont was a well-known Greater German, anti-Prussian politician and belonged to the German Progressive Party and later to the Democratic People's Party. From 1862 to 1878 he was a member of the Second Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse . He was elected for the Mainz-Stadt I constituency. The election by the electors of the city of Mainz took place unanimously in 1862. However, the government appealed against the election: In order to meet the necessary census, he had submitted documents at the election that proved that he owned a house in Mainz. However, the census did not have to be documented in the election year alone, but for the last three years. The election examination by the second chamber ended with the decision of the chamber of November 25, 1862 not to recognize the election. The necessary by-election took place on December 4th. Here too, Alexis Dumont was elected unanimously. In order to provide proof that the census had been fulfilled, he submitted government bonds for 25,000 guilders . Now the chamber confirmed the election and Dumont was able to exercise the mandate from December 17, 1862. From 1865 to 1866 he was second president of the chamber. In 1868 and 1871 he was defeated by Ludwig Bamberger in the elections to the Reichstag . He defended Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler in several trials in the Kulturkampf .

On September 26, 1877, he was elected mayor of the city of Mainz by drawing lots against Bernhard Jaup. Dumont had Rheinallee, Wallstrasse and Bahnhofstrasse built. The new main railway station and the then "Station Neutor", later "South Station", now the station Mainz Roman Theater were opened by him, as are ( in the Second World War destroyed ) City Hall and the road bridge to Mainz-Kastel .

On September 12, 1881, he was awarded the title of Lord Mayor.

The Dumonts Graphic Collection was donated to the Landesmuseum Mainz , where it formed the basis of the Department of Prints.

Dumont died during his tenure in 1885.
