Franz Edmund Johann Nepomuk Freiherr Gedult von Jungsfeld (born May 28, 1778 in Mainz ; † September 16, 1840 there ) was the first mayor of Mainz after the French occupation under Napoleon I.

Career at the time of the French occupation of Mainz

Franz Freiherr Gedult von Jungsfeld came from the Mainz aristocratic family of the same name , whose roots go back to the Middle Ages and was born as the son of the Imperial Postal Director Franz Anton Xaver Joseph Gedult von Jungsfeld; his great-uncle was the auxiliary bishop of Worms Franz Xaver Anton von Scheben (1711–1779).

He married Maria Anna Therese nee von Sachs. The later senior judge and member of the state parliament, Arnold von Jungsfeld (1810-1893), emerged from the marriage.

He studied law at the universities in Mainz and Göttingen . During his studies, Gedult von Jungsfeld also met Franz Konrad Macké , his predecessor as well as his successor as mayor in Mainz. At the time of the French occupation of Mainz, the conservative nobleman withdrew to his agricultural estates in Weisenau near Mainz and was initially not politically active.

Mayor and Mayor

In January 1813, however, he took over from the Prefect of the Mont-Tonnere Department , Jeanbon St. André , the office of Maire von Weisenau and Laubenheim . After his tenure as mayor, he worked again for a few years as a senior judge in the civil service. Franz Freiherr Gedult von Jungsfeld died on September 16, 1840 at the age of 62 in his hometown Mainz. He is buried in the main cemetery in Mainz .

Work in Mainz

Jungefeld's merit was the cultural revival and the slow reconstruction of the city of Mainz, which was badly affected in 1792/93 and 1814. By virtue of his office, he was president of the civic Hospice Administration Commission and thus responsible for the Mainz orphanage and hospital , among other things . During his tenure, what is now the second oldest German gymnastics club ( MTV 1817 Mainz ) was founded in Mainz in 1817 . In 1827 regular steamboat traffic between Mainz and Cologne was established and the Sparkasse Mainz was founded as a Mainz savings and loan bank . In 1831 the first Mainz secondary school opened . During his 17-year term of office, Mainz also became a federal fortress with far-reaching consequences for the development of the city in the 19th century. The withdrawal of the stacking right with far-reaching consequences for the financial basis of the city fell in 1831 during his term of office.
