Stephan Metz (born November 12, 1789 in Mainz ; † November 18, 1850 there ) was a Mainz mayor and lawyer . He was appointed mayor of Mainz twice, in the years 1834 to 1836 and from 1838 to 1841.

Life

After visiting the lyceum, Metz volunteered for the French army, which offered career opportunities in Mainz, France . He participated in the wars against Austria, Spain and Portugal and was wounded twice. Now that he was no longer suitable for military service, he returned to his hometown and entered the judiciary. At first he became a clerk of the court. In 1817 he placed, ever attended a university without having his lawyer exam with top marks. Soon afterwards he rose to become a star lawyer in Mainz. The Grand Duke Ludwig I of Hessen-Darmstadt appointed him supplementary judge at the district court and later at the higher court .

As early as 1831, Metz had narrowly missed the opportunity to become mayor, he had received more votes than Franz Konrad Macké . According to the municipal code of June 30, 1821, however, the Darmstadt government was able to choose one of the first three candidates; it was decided against him. Metz was not able to convince until 1834, but was voted out of office two years later. In his first term of office, Bertel Thorvaldsen was made an honorary citizen of Mainz in 1835 .

His second term was more successful than the first. Under his aegis, the fruit hall was built on the site of the former Dominican church. This building served as a multi-purpose hall as well as carnival and other cultural purposes.

He headed the Napoleonic Veterans Association (founded in 1833) for a long time . After a long illness he died in his hometown in 1850.
