Nikolaus Nack

Nikolaus Nack (born January 17, 1786 in Mainz ; † May 5, 1860 there ) was a German merchant and mayor of the city of Mainz.

Nack (son of a butcher) was a middle-class merchant and wine merchant . Without any legal training, he nevertheless got the position of Deputy President of the Mainz Commercial Court. He held the office of mayor of the city of Mainz from April 1, 1842 until his death on May 5, 1860. On December 26, 1858 he was awarded the honorary title of "Lord Mayor".

During his tenure, Nack appointed Joseph Laské to be city architect. During the events of the revolutionary year of 1848 , he took on a mediating position and was able to prevent bloodshed in a conflict between the vigilante and Prussian soldiers in May.

Nack died during his tenure in 1860.

Today in Mainz the Nackstrasse (in the Mainzer Neustadt ) is named after Nikolaus Nack.
