Wilhelm Ehrhard (born September 19, 1884 , † February 27, 1936 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( DDP ). He was Lord Mayor of Mainz from May 4, 1931 until his dismissal ( enabling law ) on March 26, 1933 .

Life

Wilhelm Ehrhard was born in Biebrich , but came from two old Mainz families (Schlippe and Kaden). He attended grammar school in Mainz until he graduated from high school in 1902. He then completed his military service as a one-year volunteer . Between 1903 and 1906 he studied law at the universities of Heidelberg, Berlin, Munich and Giessen. First of all, after completing his doctorate, he became jur. in 1909 and the assessor exam in 1910 as a lawyer in Mainz. He served during the entire First World War, at the end in the artillery force and was honored with the Iron Cross of the 2nd and 1st class.

In 1917, Ehrhard married Luise Römheld towards the end of the war. He worked with the Mainz lawyers Goerz and Pagenstecher , who represented the constituency of the city of Mainz in the state parliament of the People's State of Hesse and had many years of political experience. During the Allied occupation of the Rhineland (1919–1930), he was elected as an alderman as the occupation department in 1920, and in 1923 as mayor and deputy mayor.

Since the elected mayor Karl Külb was expelled from the unoccupied area for 20 months by the French occupying forces in 1923/24, Ehrhard ran the business independently during this time. In his function as mayor he was confirmed in 1928 for a further 12 years. On January 7, 1931, Külb resigned for health reasons. On January 22nd, 1931, Wilhelm Ehrhard was elected Lord Mayor by the city council (with 36 to 27 votes against Emil Kraus , SPD ). On March 26, 1933, two days after the "Law to Eliminate the Need of the People and the Reich", he was deposed. Nevertheless, he found a new job at the Reichsfinanzhof and moved to Munich in May 1933. Until his death during a business trip, he worked as a tax attorney.

Wilhelm Ehrhard was buried in the main cemetery in Mainz in the Schlippe family grave, field 21, row 18, nos. 28 to 30. The listed honorary grave will be held in 2020 by his granddaughters on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the death of Heinrich Gottlob Schlippe and of the 135th birthday of Wilhelm Ehrhard (September 19, 2019) restored. Heinrich Gottlob Schlippe, former owner of the Adler pharmacy and Mainz city council, died on September 22nd, 1819 and was the first to be buried in this family grave.
