Günter Beck (born September 4, 1956 in Mainz-Mombach ) is a German politician of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party . Since February 2010 he has been mayor of the state capital Mainz and department head for finances, investments and sports.

Political career

In 1984 he was elected to the Mainz city council for the first time, at that time as an independent, non-party candidate on an open list of the Greens. In 1990 he gave up his city council mandate to work as the head of the municipal youth house . After starting his own business, he was re-elected to the city council in 1994. In 1998 he joined Alliance 90 / The Greens. In 2003 he became the leaseholder of part of the gastronomy of the "Old Patrone", the "Peace Powder Magazine No. 20" of the Mainz fortress . The press reported in mid-2010 that a five-digit euro amount had accumulated due to orally negotiated contracts and / or additions to the contract, which concerned controversial ancillary costs arrears. Since Beck had become mayor and finance director of the city in February 2010, he submitted his own application to the court in order to reach a court settlement with the lessor, Mainz Wohnbau , and to demonstrate his integrity.

As the successor to Jens Beutel , who retired on December 31, 2011, he exercised the right of representation for the Lord Mayor until the inauguration of the new Lord Mayor on April 18, 2012. Beck also ran as a candidate for this election. His election campaign was coordinated by Katharina Binz . The first ballot took place on March 11, 2012, Beck achieved 26.6% (17,204 votes) and was second behind the SPD candidate Michael Ebling , who achieved 40.5% (corresponds to 26,202 votes). The runoff election between Ebling and Beck on March 25, 2012 Beck lost with 41.8% of the vote, Ebling won 58.2%.

In May 2017, Beck was re-elected by the Mainz city council for an eight-year term as mayor and head of finance.

Beck is a founding member of the alternative Mainz carnival club, Meenzer Drecksäck , and has been president of the Carl-Zuckmayer Society since August 2018.
