Johann Maria Kertell (born May 18, 1771 in Mainz ; † May 24, 1839 ) was a German entrepreneur and politician.

life and work

He was the son of the soap maker Johannes Kertell and his wife Klara. The wholesale merchant Kertell was active by imperial decree of March 1804 as a member of the city council (conseil municipal) in Mainz and since 1805 member of the Chamber of Commerce in Mainz , of which he was president from 1823 to 1830. He was president of the committee for the construction of the Taunus Railway and was also sent by the city of Mainz as a member of the second chamber of the state parliament in what was then the Grand Duchy of Hesse . Kertell acquired the Königsklinger Aue , which was then called Kertellaue .

Kertell stood up in the state parliament in the political opposition of Rhenish Hessian MPs, especially for Rhenish legislation. Kertell also found clear echoes of the typical ideas and reform efforts of pre-March liberalism.

Mardi Gras activity

When a reorientation of the Rhenish Carnival took place in the 1920s and 1930s, Kertell also got involved in this cause in Mainz. In 1837 he founded the Mainzer Ranzengarde and thus became the founder of the first Mainz Carnival Guard. He was her first General Field Marshal and President at the same time.

1839 was the last carnival under the chairmanship of Kertell. He died on May 24, 1839 at the age of 68. His death was lamented as a misfortune by all classes of society in Mainz. The ships of the port and the steamboats of the Rhine lowered their flags. A large part of the citizenry escorted his remains to his final resting place in the main cemetery in Mainz .
