Stefan Karl Michel (born June 9, 1839 ; † March 30, 1906 in Mainz ) was a German businessman and politician . Michel was made an honorary citizen of Mainz in 1905 .

His parents were Karl Georg Michel (1811–1865) from Idstein, and his wife Katharina Metz (1820–1901) from Mainz.

Life

Stefan Karl Michel was born in 1839. In the 1862 campaign he was Shrovetide Prince . After finishing school he was elected to the local council in 1871 at the age of 31 . In 1874 he resigned from the local council and Michel was elected to the Mainz city council. Three years later he resigned from the city council. During his tenure as councilor and city councilor, he initiated an important project for the city of Mainz: As a young and ambitious city councilor, he was one of the most important people in the political initiation of the Mainz city expansion on what was then Gartenfeld . In 1880 he began to be politically active again: from January 1, 1880, he was President of the Grand Ducal Chamber of Commerce in Mainz . Through his work, he helped the Chamber of Commerce to achieve exceptional recognition. This gave it a prominent role in trade compared to other institutions. On January 1, 1881, Michel was re-elected to the city council. He belonged to her now until his death. In the same year he became a member of the Hessian State Railway Council. On November 1, 1884, he became a member of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse . From 1885 to 1901 he was chairman of the leather industry trade association .

When the district and provincial order was introduced in 1894, he became a representative of the people in the Hessian provincial assembly and in the provincial committee and in the district assembly . From 1896 he participated in the preliminary examination of the first commercial code , which was announced on May 10, 1897 in the Reichsgesetzblatt . In 1897 he had to leave the Hessian State Railway Council as it was dissolved. From January 9, 1901, Michel was a member of the German Trading Association , on February 20, 1901 he was elected deputy chairman of this organization. He was also a member of the economic committee for the preparation of commercial contracts. In addition, he was a partner in the company Mayer, Michel and Deninger , after which he was a member of the management board and chairman of the supervisory board of Aktiengesellschaft Mainzer Lederwerke Mayer, Michel and Deninger . In addition, he was chairman of the board of the Darmstädter bank for trade and industry and vice-chairman of the board of the steam shipping company for the Lower and Middle Rhine in Düsseldorf .

From 1880 to 1905, Stefan Karl Michel was President of the Mainz Chamber of Commerce .

On December 31, 1904, the decision was made to make Michel an honorary citizen of Mainz. On January 2, 1905, he was made an honorary citizen. Michel fell seriously ill at the age of 66. After a short time Michel died on March 30, 1906 in Mainz. The eulogy held Karl Göttelmann . Stefan Karl Michel was buried in the main cemetery in Mainz .
