Nicola Racke

Josef Adolf Nicola Racke , often Racké (born January 11, 1847 in Mainz , † December 26, 1908 in Mainz) was a wine merchant and member of the German Reichstag and the second chamber of the estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse (Catholic People's Party or Center ).

Life

Nicola Racké is the son of the merchant Jakob Racké and his wife Anna Maria née Wüst. After several years of private lessons, Racke attended the Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium until 1864 and then until 1866, a foreign institute for further training in the field of commercial science and modern languages. After his father's death in 1866, he took over his father's wine vinegar factory and wine shop .

On July 12, 1870, Nicola Racké married Katharina Wilhelmine Moufang, a niece of the Mainz diocese administrator and canon Christoph Moufang and sister of the Heidelberg lawyer Wilhelm Moufang senior, the father of the Heidelberg lawyers Nicola Moufang , Eugen Moufang , Franz Moufang and Wilhelm Moufang . Nicola Racké's brother Karl Racké was mayor of Mainz.

In 1869, Nicola Racké played a leading role in founding the Hesse Catholic People's Party, a forerunner of the Hesse Center Party . In 1874 Racké was elected to the Mainz city council. In 1884 he was a co-founder of the center in Mainz. In the 22nd to 28th electoral period (1875-1893) he was a member of the second chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. In the estates he represented the constituency of Rheinhessen 10 / Bingen-Land .

Because of his political and religious convictions, he was sentenced to three weeks in prison, among other things, because he called the offering of the Mass by a suspended and excommunicated priest a sacrilege according to the church .

From 1884 to 1890 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the constituency of the Grand Duchy of Hesse 9 Mainz , Oppenheim and the German Center Party. At the beginning of the 1890s he was involved in conflicts in the Hessian center, from which Adam Joseph Schmitt emerged as the leader of the Hessian center.

Awards

In June 1875 he received the Order of Pius from the Pope , and in 1883 the Hessian Medal of Merit with the ribbon of the Order of Philip for his services in averting the danger of water in the city of Mainz.
