Eugen Moufang (born January 7, 1889 in Heidelberg Grand Duchy of Baden ; † April 15, 1967 Heidelberg, Federal Republic of Germany ) was a German lawyer, established lawyer and holder of the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .

Eugen Moufang was the third eldest son of Wilhelm Moufang senior, who holds a doctorate in law and has his own law firm, (* January 6, 1852 in Mainz ; † January 30, 1942 in Heidelberg ) and his wife Julie Moufang, née. Stutzmann (born February 14, 1857 in Wiesbaden-Biebrich ; † September 29, 1938 in Heidelberg). Wilhelm Moufang senior came from a strictly Catholic Mainz family, whose members also include theologians Adam Franz Lennig , Christoph Moufang and Edmund Georg Nicolaus Hardy . Wilhelm Moufang senior's sister, Wilhelmine Katharina Moufang, was married to Nicola Racke . All Moufangs were loyal supporters of the German Center Party and later the CDU .

Eugen Moufang had four brothers: Nicola Moufang (* May 30, 1886 in Heidelberg; † April 11, 1967 ibid), Fritz Moufang (* October 5, 1887 in Heidelberg; † March 10, 1906 ibid), Franz Moufang (* 19th April 1967), April 1893 in Heidelberg; † May 29, 1984 ibid), Wilhelm Moufang (born October 4, 1895 in Heidelberg; † January 21, 1989 Neckargemünd ).

Eugen Moufang was married to Mabel Moufang, b. Beck, widowed Wellensiek. She brought the daughter Inge Wellensiek and the son Jobst Wellensiek into the marriage.

Study and dissertation

All Moufang brothers followed their father’s wish and began studying law. All four, including the fifth brother Fritz, who was still living at the time, were graduates of the Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium Heidelberg, which they left with excellent high school diplomas. Eugen Moufang passed his matriculation examination at the Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium in 1907.

Eugen Moufang then studied in Heidelberg at the Ruperto Carola , at the Humboldt University of Berlin , at the University of Oxford and at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg , Eugen Moufang spent several semesters in Freiburg, where he spent this time in his house Aunt Anna Maria Probst, b. After his assessor exam in 1919, Eugen Moufang practiced with his father and for a limited period also with his brother Franz in his father's office, whose address is now “Drs. Moufang, Moufang and Moufang ”read. At that time, the office was still in Heidelberg's old town, at Hauptstrasse 221, in the former Nadler house . After that, the Moufang law firm continued to operate at Hauptstrasse 92 for a long time before moving to the western part of Heidelberg. Today the law firm is located in an important Art Nouveau ensemble in the west of Heidelberg with its headquarters. It was successfully continued by Eugen Moufang's stepson Jobst Wellensiek as a partner company with nationwide branches until 2011.

Second World War - Presentation order - US forces liberate Heidelberg

With the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, the brothers Eugen and Franz Moufang, now at the age of 52 and 46, received a draft order and also served in the Second World War until the end of the war, the surrender in 1945. Eugen Moufang left active service in rank of a major in the reserve, awarded the German Cross in Silver and the War Merit Cross (1939) 1st Class with Swords.

The US Army liberated Heidelberg on March 30, 1945 . “ The Neckar-Enz position came within range of the front when American troops on 22/23. On March 30, Heidelberg fell into American hands. “The city was spared a bombing raid and became the headquarters of the US armed forces. After the collapse of the German Reich and the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht , Eugen Moufang devoted all his energy to rebuilding his homeland from May 1945.

Re-establishment of the legal system after the unconditional surrender in 1945

Moufang made significant contributions that paved the way for the reestablishment of a democratic understanding of the law and the legal system , and enabled the rebuilding of the professional organization, the bar association , under the American occupation . From autumn 1945 lawyers could practice freely again on a democratic legal basis . Moufang himself worked from then on as a resident lawyer until old age, when his poor health ordered him to withdraw. Eugen Moufang held the office of chairman of the Heidelberg Lawyers' Association for 15 years and was on the board of the North Baden Bar Association for 15 years. Moufang resigned both offices in 1960 and from then on left the Moufang law firm to his stepson Jobst Wellensiek.

On his 70th birthday in 1959, Eugen Moufang was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany 1st Class by Federal President Theodor Heuss in recognition of his extraordinary achievements in rebuilding the Bar Association in Baden-Württemberg .

The golden doctoral degree - honoring in later years

Another great honor was given to Eugen Moufang five years later. Already largely tied to his house through an ailment, Moufang was given a golden doctoral degree in the family circle in his house on Scheffelstrasse on January 7, 1964, his 75th birthday, by Ruperto Carola, his alma mater , represented by its rector presented.

In the spring of 1967 Nicola and Eugen Moufang, the two eldest of the four Moufang brothers who were still alive, died. Nicola died on April 11, 1967 and only four days later, on April 15, in the night from Saturday to Sunday, his brother Eugen followed him.
