Dr. Adam Joseph Schmitt

Adam Joseph Johann Schmitt (born December 27, 1855 in Finthen near Mainz , † November 18, 1928 in Mainz) was a German politician ( Center Party of Hesse ).

Live and act

Adam Joseph Schmitt was the son of the farmer Philipp Schmitt and his wife Fides nee Hembes. Adam Joseph Schmitt married Christina Elise Magdalena nee Gottsleben.

After attending the St. Marienschule and grammar school in Mainz, Schmitt studied at the universities of Strasbourg, Leipzig , Tübingen and Gießen . In 1879 he received his doctorate in Jena to the Dr. jur. In 1881 Schmitt established himself as a lawyer in Mainz.

In 1889 Schmitt became a member of the city council of Mainz. A year later he also became a member of the district council and the district committee of Mainz. In 1893 Schmitt was elected to the second chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse for the constituency Rheinhessen 13 and 12 / Mainz-Land , to which he belonged until after the First World War. As Third President he was a member of the Presidium of the Chamber. From 1895 to 1903 Schmitt was also a member of the Reichstag of the German Empire . In 1903 he lost in the runoff election against the Social Democrat Eduard David . In order to be able to combine both mandates, Schmitt had to commute. During the sessions of the Reichstag he therefore lived in a suite in the Berlin Central Hotel. Since Schmitt played an important role in the settlement of an internal party crisis in the Hessian center in the early 1890s, Schmitt was able to prevail in the Reichstag elections of 1896 and 1898 with the help of the liberal votes of his constituency, with the consequence that he was also leader of the Hessian Center Party rose - a position that he would hold until the post-war period.

From January 1919 to June 1920 Schmitt was a member of the Center Party for constituency 34 (Hesse) in the Weimar National Assembly . Also from 1919 to 1920 he was a member of the Landtag of the People's State of Hesse . His successor in the state parliament was Georg Zilch .

In 1912 Joseph Schmitt served as President of the German Catholic Congress in Aachen .
