The Staatliche Majolika Keramik Manufaktur Karlsruhe GmbH is a manufacturer of various ceramic goods (including majolica ) from Karlsruhe .

history

The manufacture was founded as a grand ducal majolica manufacture by Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden on the recommendation of the two painters and graphic artists Hans Thoma and Wilhelm Süs . The architect Friedrich Ratzel was commissioned to construct a suitable building in the palace garden park. In 1901 the completed building could be handed over to the first director and artistic director of the manufactory Wilhelm Süs. After initial economic difficulties, it had 150 employees in 1915. The manufactory's first heyday was under the direction of Nicola Moufang , who was director from 1921 to 1925.

In 1999, the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg acquired the manufacture. However, in the course of the financial crisis in 2010, the Landesbank sold the majolica to the city of Karlsruhe. The company transferred this to the Majolica Foundation, which was newly established in 2011.

Famous works

Since 2001, the “Blue Ray” made of 1,645 blue majolica tiles has been leading from the castle tower of Karlsruhe Castle across the castle garden to the manufactory's building. The blue beam was created on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the manufacture. There is also a ceramics museum on the premises of the manufactory, which is a branch of the Baden State Museum .

In the more than one hundred year old tradition of the company, various national and international artists were involved in the design of majolica. These included Max Laeuger , Bruno Paul and Ludwig König in the early days and Martha Katzer and Gerda Conitz , Gretel Schulte-Hostedde , Erwin Spuler , Eva Fritz-Lindner and Friedegard Glatzle in the following years . Later, modern artists such as the painter Isa Dahl or the designers Hans Theo Baumann and Luigi Colani also worked for the company.

The sculptures that are awarded at the German Media Prize come from the majolica factory . The Bambi Media Prize was also originally a ceramic figure from the manufactory. The “Laemmle” sculpture of the Carl Laemmle Producer Prize , which is awarded annually to an outstanding film producer in the Carl Laemmle birthplace of Laupheim , also comes from the Majolika Manufaktur.

A cycle of 14 majolica reliefs by the painter and sculptor Markus Lüpertz with the title Genesis is planned for the seven stops of the Karlsruhe underground tram , which is to be completed in 2020 .
