Makai Mason (born May 4, 1995 ) is a German - American basketball player . It measures 1.85 meters and is called the point guard used. He has been playing for Bàsquet Manresa in Spain since 2020 and was already part of the German national basketball team .

Career

Mason played for the Connecticut State's Hotchkiss School basketball team before starting his college career at Yale University in 2014 . In his first year he achieved an average of 6.2 points per game and distributed 1.6 basket assists. He achieved his breakthrough in the 2015/16 season: He was in the starting line-up of the "Bulldogs" in 30 missions and achieved averages of 16 points, 3.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game. Mason made a name for himself especially with his appearance in the first round of the NCAA playoffs against Baylor University . Against the favored Baylor he contributed 31 points to the 79:75 victory of Yales. Mason considered signing up for the 2016 NBA Draft , but dropped the idea to continue playing for Yale.

At the beginning of November 2016 he suffered a fracture in his right foot, this injury put him out of action for the entire 2016/17 season. In preparation for the 2017/18 season, Mason suffered a stress fracture in his left foot. It was only used in one game during the 2017/18 season.

For the 2018/19 season he moved to Baylor University . He played 28 games for Baylor in the 2018/19 season, was always part of the starting line-up and averaged 14.9 points and 2.5 rebounds per encounter. Furthermore, he prepared statistically 3.4 basket successes of his fellow people.

In July 2019 he signed his first contract as a professional basketball player with Alba Berlin ( Basketball Bundesliga ). He did not take part in the decisive games of the two title wins with the Berliners in the 2019/20 season: he missed the cup final in February 2020 injured, at the season finale tournament of the Bundesliga in June 2020, after a three-month break due to the spread was carried out by Covid-19 , he did not attend because he had stayed in the United States for personal reasons. Mason scored an average of 3.9 points per game in his first year in the Bundesliga. In summer 2020, he used a contractual clause to separate from Alba Berlin and switched to the Spanish first division club Bàsquet Manresa .

National team

In July 2016 he was called up to the German national team before the start of the European Championship qualification and made his international debut on July 30th in a friendly against Ukraine. Due to the cancellation of several established regulars, Mason got the chance to prove himself in the jersey of the national team. Contact with the then national coach Chris Fleming only came about because Mason's father called him and offered him his son. He has played a total of 15 international matches for Germany so far.

Personal

Mason comes from Greenfield in the US state of Massachusetts . He is a citizen of the United States and Germany. His first name Makai comes from Hawaiian and means " towards the sea". His mother Jody, who was born in Mainz , wanted to call him Wolfgang at first, but his father was against it. His father Dan worked for a long time as the assistant coach of the basketball selection at the Hotchkiss School .
