The Makhaleng [ mɑχɑˈlɜŋ ] (from Sesotho lekhala 'pass', meaning “river at the passes”; in South Africa Kornetspruit, German about “Hornbach”) is a river in Lesotho . It is a right tributary of the Senqu , which is called the Oranje or Orange River in South Africa.
geography
The Makhaleng arises in the east of the Maseru district northeast of the 2,886 meter high Machache from several small source rivers. From there it flows in numerous meanders cut deep into the basalt mountains south and south-west through the districts of Maseru and Mafeteng . It runs behind the first mountain range of the Maloti Mountains . In one section it forms the border between the two districts. The Makhaleng enters the sandstone area of the Lowlands and reaches Mohale's Hoek District. The river eventually runs about 30 kilometers along the border with South Africa and then flows into the Senqu at the deepest point in Lesotho, about 20 kilometers south of Mohale's Hoek . Like all rivers in Lesotho, the Makhaleng is not navigable.
In the upper reaches are the Qiloane Falls, a 30 meters deep, wide and multi-level waterfall. They are a destination for tourists. At the southernmost stretch of the river is the Makhaleng Bridge border crossing to the South African province of Free State .
Hydrometry
The discharge rate of the Makhaleng was measured at the mouth in m³ / s (1948 to 2010).
