The Makomanai ( Japanese 真 駒 内 川 , Makomanai-gawa ) is a river on the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . It is 21 km long and has a 37 km² catchment area , which is completely within the urban area of Sapporo . The Makomanai is a right tributary of the Toyohira , which in turn flows into the Ishikari .
description
The river has its source in Bankei-numa ( 万 計 沼 ), a small pond on the northern slope of the Soranuma-dake mountain, at an altitude of 913 m TP. Initially, it flows northeast as a mountain stream. Shortly before the middle part of the river, known as Tokiwa ( 常 ), the gradient becomes noticeably smaller. Here the Makomanai changes its direction of flow to the north and crosses a valley around 200 meters wide. The confluence with the Toyohira is located in the urban area at Makomanai Park .
In the Ainu language , Makomanai means "back river". Edwin Dun , an American " foreign contractor ", began in 1876 on the lower reaches of the Makomanai with the construction of a model farm, with which he established modern methods of dairy farming and cattle breeding on Hokkaidō. The valley around Tokiwa remained undeveloped for a long time. Measures in the flood led in the 1960s to a straightening of the river. The lower part of Tokiwa has now been built over with a housing estate. The estuary is a spawning area for Masu salmon .
