In the May 13, 2017 issue of Billboard Magazine, Cyrus announced the first single of their sixth studio album, Malibu , to be released on May 11, 2017. While the title of the song refers to the Californian city of Malibu , the song is about Cyrus' love for her fiancé Liam Hemsworth . In the same interview, Cyrus said she wrote the song in the car on her way to her first day as a judge on The Voice .

Cyrus sang the song for the first time live on May 13, 2017 at the Wango Tango, a concert hosted annually by the radio station KIIS-FM . On May 21, 2017, she performed at the Billboard Music Awards .
Music video
The music video was released along with the song on May 11, 2017. Directed by Cyrus and Diane Martel. In the video, Cyrus can be seen on the beach and in front of a waterfall. The music video was viewed 366 million times on YouTube (as of June 2018).
