action

Mickey King is a dime novelist based in Rome. He is hired by a man named Ben Dinuccio to ghostwrite the autobiography of a famous person without first knowing who it is. King arrives in Malta to meet his contact person. The intrusive Mr. Miller, whom King initially takes to be the contact person, is murdered when he mistakenly billets himself in King's hotel room. Later another fellow traveler reveals himself to be the contact person and brings King to the person he is supposed to write about.

This is former Hollywood star Preston Gilbert, who had primarily played gangster roles successfully before he was forced to go back to Europe. He dictated his memoir to Mickey in just a week. Finally, he invites his friends and Mickey to dinner in a restaurant. A man disguised as a priest tries to shoot Preston and Mickey, but Mickey survives.

After the assassination, the author receives clues from a clairvoyant as to why someone would have wanted to kill Preston. Years earlier, Preston was embroiled in a scandal. A youngster was killed in a hunting lodge after being raped by several hunters. The culprits, including the powerful politician Frank Cipola, believed that Preston would tell of the incident in his biography.

Mickey goes to the beach where the girl is buried. The killer appears and tries to kill him, but Mickey runs a pickup truck over him. To his surprise, he discovers that the killer is the allegedly dead Miller. King discovers a gunshot wound in his leg and faints. When he comes to, he is lying in a luxurious hospital room, doctored. Frank Cipola turns out to be his benefactor, who has a corrupt police officer warn King not to pursue the affair further. Otherwise he would be held accountable for Miller's murder.

Reviews

"Ingenious crime comedy, successful in direction, representation and camera work, which lovingly targets the genre, but in some gags is too much tailored to insiders."

"A bit bumpy, but still amusing and well played, especially Rooney."

“The plot, which has a slightly better impact than the film as a whole, is full of unbelievable intricacies and strange ideas - such as: B. an internationally operating contract killer who teaches literature at the University of Berkeley between the murders he has committed. Nevertheless, the action is painfully aware of all its leanings, perhaps due to the idea that something is better when you know where it comes from. "
