Mammillaria formosa is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet formosa means 'well designed'.

description

Mammillaria formosa grows individually or occasionally forms groups with age. The depressed spherical to short cylindrical, light green shoots reach heights of 15 to 20 centimeters with diameters of 9 to 10 centimeters (and more). The pyramidal warts are close together. They contain milk juice . The axillae are covered with white wool. There are six, rarely four to seven, slightly pink, up to 8 millimeters long central spines with a darker tip. The 20 to 24 radial spines, which are sometimes missing, are needle-like or bristle-like, occasionally flattened and white. They are 3 to 6 millimeters long.

The white to pink flowers are 1 to 1.5 centimeters long and have the same diameter. The red fruits contain light brown seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria formosa is common in the Mexican states of Aguascalientes , Guanajuato , Querétaro , Coahuila , Hidalgo , Tamaulipas , Nuevo León , San Luis Potosí, and Zacatecas .

It was first described in 1838 by Michael Joseph François Scheidweiler .

The following species and varieties are synonyms :
Mammillaria formosa var. Dispicula Monville ex Labor. (1853), Mammillaria formosa var. Laevior Monville ex Labor. (1853) and Mammillaria arroyensis Repp. (1989).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria formosa subsp. formosa :
    The nominate form has 20 to 22 white radial spines and light pink flowers.
  • Mammillaria formosa subsp. microthele (Muehlenpf.) DRHunt :
    It was first described in 1848 as Mammillaria microthele by Philipp August Friedrich Mühlenpfordt . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria formosa . The subspecies has 22 to 24 flattened, bristle-like radial spines. The flowers are almost pure white. The following synonyms are known: Mammillaria microthele Muehlenpf. (1848) and Mammillaria formosa var. Microthele Salm-Dyck (1850).
  • Mammillaria formosa subsp. pseudocrucigera (RTCraig) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1945 as Mammillaria pseudocrucigera by Robert T. Craig . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria formosa . The subspecies only 18 radial spines. The flowers are strikingly pink with white-edged perianth segments. A synonym is: Mammillaria pseudocrucigera R.T. Craig (1945).

Mammillaria formosa subsp. microthele in 2002 in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. endangered, classified. In the 2009 update, the subspecies was not reassessed and removed from the red list, as there is no classification for the other subspecies.
